Art Talk: Women artists into Art Historiography: How to contribute to an inclusive art historical canon? Integrating Dutch eighteenth-century-

Host: Romy Kerkhof, Art Historian
Date/time: Saturday, 30th of September, 16:00 – 17:00
Despite the increasing amount of research devoted to restoring the under-represented position of women artists in art history since the 1970s, research into Dutch eighteenth-century women artists is still in its infancy. A limited number of overview works such as Kloek (2013) and Graves (1969) have made an important contribution to collecting biographical information on these women artists. However, few scholars have touched upon the national and international artistic relations of these women with other artists, art dealers, collectors and institutions. Conducting this research is accompanied by challenges regarding perspective, terminology and methodology, which has been the subject of numerous feminist theories over the past decades. Some of these complexities will be further addressed based on my own research experiences.
As an art historian, Romy Kerkhof specialized in Dutch eighteenth-century women artists. Graduated from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, she holds a BA in Media, Art, Design and Architecture and is currently enrolled in the MA program Arts of the Netherlands at the University of Amsterdam. In 2021, she was working at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, where she conducted several advisory reports that served as an instrument in enhancing the share of women artists in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
At the moment, she is working as a guest writer for the Parisian research institute Archives of Women in the Arts, Research and Exhibitions (AWARE). In collaboration with the Vrouwenproject of the Rijksmuseum, these publications investigate Dutch eighteenth-century female artists and their artistic relationships.
