Irene van der Wal (she/her)
Major Maintenance/Construction Manager at Shell
About
My name is Irene van der Wal and I am the Major Maintenance and Construction Manager for a large chemical plant. In this role, I am responsible for the safe execution of both maintenance and capital projects. I have a background in Aerospace Engineering and a huge passion for engineering. I always strive to optimize and simplify processes with a focus on collaboration, feasibility and safety. I am also the proud mother of two sons, which means that in addition to my work, I am also surrounded by men at home. I’m excited to participate in the Equals Campaign, sharing my experiences and learning from you!
What qualities do you think are essential for success?
First of all, doing what you love in an environment where you can be yourself is, in my opinion, essential for success. If you like it, you’re probably good at it. Secondly, know what your strengths and weaknesses are and make sure your job matches these strengths. This allows you to focus on reinforcing these strengths, while putting just a little energy into preventing your weaknesses from becoming blockages. Thirdly, be trustworthy. Do what you say and say what you do. This also makes you credible. In short, have fun, enjoy what you do, be energetic and success will follow.
